This Is What a Documented Roof Looks Like
Real footage from our crews, not stock. The inspection that documents every layer for your claim, the tear-off down to the deck with new wood wherever it's needed, and the roof that goes back on built for the next storm.
- Storm damage hides at the edges. That's what gets missed.
- New decking whenever it's needed, never a layover.
- Local, licensed, and permanently here to honor the warranty.

Hail inspection and the insurance pathWest Chicago: The Place and the Roofs
West Chicago is a DuPage County city of 25,614 people (2020 census). It started as a railroad junction, first called Junction and later Turner after John Bice Turner, president of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad in 1855. The Union Pacific West line still runs through, with a Metra station in town.
That rail history is why the old core around Main Street looks different from the subdivisions that grew up around it, and it's why roof age can vary a lot from one block to the next.

Storm History for West Chicago: What the Public Records Say
We only cite storms that NWS Chicago or the Storm Prediction Center documented, and we say plainly when a write-up doesn't name West Chicago. A report in DuPage County or in a nearby town is context, not proof that a roof here was hit.
The April 27, 2026 wake low wind event had a highest gust of 63 mph (DeKalb County), and NWS Chicago's write-up lists DuPage County and names Warrenville, the next town east of West Chicago. West Chicago isn't named. Source: NWS Chicago wake low summary.
The March 10, 2026 hail included a 4.8-inch stone at Darien, in the southeast part of the county. That's well away from West Chicago, but the same county's hail history shows how uneven a single storm can be. Source: NOAA Storm Events, March 10, 2026.
The August 11, 2026 derecho had a highest gust of 97 mph at Sugar Grove in Kane County, and DuPage County is among its counties. NWS did not name West Chicago. Source: NWS Chicago derecho summary.

Storm Damage Roofing Services for West Chicago
Every West Chicago project starts with a Haag-certified inspector on the roof deck. They walk each slope, press-test for bruising and mat fractures, check flashings, pipe boots and vents, and photograph the damage. The inspection takes about 45 minutes and produces a report formatted for an insurance submission. The report is yours whether or not you hire us. Our post on what hail damage looks like explains what the inspector looks for.
For West Chicago homes with confirmed damage, C&N handles storm restoration from tear-off through final inspection: removing damaged shingles to the deck, replacing bad decking and underlayment, and installing GAF Timberline HDZ shingles with ice and water barrier at the eaves and valleys. Flashings, pipe boots and drip edge are replaced new. Siding, gutters and soffit are included when the claim covers them.
If water is coming in, don't wait for paperwork. Our emergency repair crews can tarp or seal a breach to keep the interior dry. For the steps on a claim, see how to file a roof insurance claim.
Insurance Claims in West Chicago
We're roofing contractors, not public adjusters. Your claim is between you and your carrier. What C&N does is document the damage, meet the adjuster on your roof and scope the work.
We recommend a Haag-certified inspection before you call your insurance company. A report with hit counts, measurements and slope-by-slope photos gives you facts before you talk to a carrier. When the adjuster comes, we're on the roof walking through the findings. If the adjuster's scope leaves out documented damage, we send supporting photos and a written scope for a supplement. Carriers handle supplements routinely.
If a claim is denied or underpaid, Illinois law gives you options: ask for a re-inspection, hire a licensed public adjuster, or invoke the appraisal clause in your policy. We can tell you which path fits your situation, but we can't promise how it will turn out.

Why West Chicago Homeowners Need a Local Contractor
After any big storm in Chicagoland, out-of-town crews show up and knock on doors. The problem isn't always the workmanship. It's what happens when you find a leak a year later, or when your insurer asks for documentation, and the company that signed your contract has no office to call.
West Chicago makes every roofer register with the city and file a state license, insurance and a bond before a permit is issued. Ask to see that registration before you sign anything.
C&N Construction is headquartered in Hillside, IL and has been at the same address since 2015. Over 25,400 completed projects across Chicagoland, W-2 crews instead of subcontractors, GAF Master Elite with Golden Pledge warranty coverage, Haag-certified inspectors, a BBB A+ rating and a 4.6 Google review average.
Class 4 Shingles in West Chicago
When a roof is being replaced through an insurance claim, you can usually upgrade to the impact-rated option by paying the difference between the standard material and the Class 4 product. Timberline HDZ is our standard architectural shingle. The impact-rated option is GAF Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat, which GAF rates UL 2218 Class 4 when sold in the marked packages (GAF, checked October 2026). No shingle is hail-proof, and large stones will damage any roofing material.
Some insurers offer a premium discount for a UL 2218 Class 4 roof, and the amount varies by carrier and policy, so ask your agent before you choose.
We serve West Chicago and nearby towns including Wheaton, Winfield, Warrenville, Carol Stream, and Geneva. Our in-house crews carry the same GAF warranty coverage on every project.
On an approved storm claim, your out-of-pocket cost in West Chicago for the covered work is your deductible. Your policy sets it: often a flat amount such as $1,000 to $2,500, and for wind and hail frequently a percentage of dwelling coverage (1% to 2%). Paying cash, most residential roof replacements land between $14,000 and $25,000 depending on the size of the home, with larger or complex roofs running higher and repairs starting around $400.
What moves the number
Roof size and pitch, tear-off layers, decking condition, and material tier. Every quote is itemized line by line, so you can see which one is moving yours.
What a normal job includes
Tear-off and disposal, underlayment and ice and water shield, flashing and drip edge, ridge venting, cleanup with magnetic sweeps, the permit, and warranty registration.
Full pricing detail: replacement costs, repair costs, and how we get paid when the inspection is free. Insurance figures assume a covered peril and approved claim; your policy controls. The only out-of-pocket surprises we allow are the ones we disclose first: rotted decking and upgrades you choose.
Illinois roofing license #104.017643. GAF Master Elite (top 2% of contractors nationwide), Haag Certified Inspectors, BBB A+, OSHA certified crews. Work carries a 2-year limited lifetime workmanship warranty plus manufacturer-backed GAF system warranty options. Crews dispatch from the Hillside headquarters and work West Chicago and its neighboring towns year round. See the work itself, our crews' own photos, on the recent work page.
On a recent insurance-funded roof, the carrier's first estimate missed 292 linear feet of gutter work. Our documented supplement recovered it: a $2,928 line added to the carrier's own estimate, with photos attached. And when we didn't complete a $13.81 downspout item on another project, the final invoice showed a $13.81 credit. Itemized in both directions, every time. The actual documents are on our billing transparency page.

A handyman is fine when
One slipped shingle on a young roof, a gutter re-hang, or a small cash fix under a few hundred dollars. No claim involved, no documentation needed. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a truck roll.
Call us when
Storm damage, anything slope-wide, a replacement, or any job where insurance is paying, because that's a documentation job as much as a roofing job. Weighing whether to file at all? The break-even math is here.
It's urgent when
Water is inside, decking is exposed, or a tree is on the roof. Emergency tarping runs 24/7, and the tarp decision is separate from choosing your replacement contractor, so don't let anyone bundle the two at your door.
How It Works When You Say Yes
No-risk contract. You sign a contingency agreement. Work starts after insurance approves the claim. If it doesn't go through, you owe nothing.
Your budget, your call. You can spec down the project to match your insurance payout exactly. You won't pay for unapproved work unless you tell us to order it before the approval.
We call you first. If there's a gap between our recommendation and insurance, we call you. The only reasons you'd pay extra are damaged lumber or a luxury shingle upgrade.
Roofing Permits in West Chicago
What the City of West Chicago Community Development Department publishes about a reroof, checked October 22, 2026:
- Permit for a reroof: Required. The city says a permit is required for roofs and siding, and that minor repairs under 100 square feet may not need one. Call the Building Division at (630) 293-2200, ext. 131 to confirm. Source
- Fee: A flat $80.00 for simple projects such as roofs or siding. Source
- Ice barrier: Required. Ice and water shield must run at least 24 inches up from the outside wall and 18 inches on each side of valleys, and the city inspects it before shingles go on. Shingles must be rated for at least 25 years, and the city allows the original layer plus one more. Source
- Contractor registration: Every contractor must register with the city before the permit is issued. Roofers must provide a State of Illinois roofing license, insurance naming the city as certificate holder and a $10,000 surety bond. Source
Everything above comes from the sources linked. Call the building department to confirm before work starts. See the suburb roofing permit table for other towns.
