A severe thunderstorm complex moved across the Chicago metro on the afternoon of July 27, 2026, and by the evening it had produced something this summer hadn't seen yet: multiple tornadoes confirmed on the ground across DuPage, Will, and Cook counties, followed by a destructive burst of straight-line wind on the Lake County lakefront. National Weather Service Chicago damage surveys have now rated the tracks, and the picture is clear. This was a significant local tornado event in the middle of an already active severe season.
If your home was anywhere near one of these tracks, there is a short window where documenting damage is easiest and your insurance claim is strongest. This post covers what happened, exactly which communities were hit, and the steps to take this week to protect your house and your claim.
What Happened on July 27
Supercells developed during the afternoon and tracked across the western and southern suburbs, prompting a series of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings with 60 mph wind and 1 inch hail tags, Tornado Warnings (at least one carrying a radar-indicated debris signature), and a Flash Flood Warning as heavy rain followed the wind. The strongest rotation produced an EF-1 tornado in the south suburbs. By the time the complex reached the lake, it had evolved into a damaging wind event measured at 82 mph near Waukegan.

The Confirmed Tornado Tracks
South suburbs: EF-1, 110 mph, 11.4 miles
The strongest tornado of the day touched down in the Hazel Crest area and tracked 11.4 miles through the south suburbs, impacting Country Club Hills, Markham, and Glenwood with peak winds of 110 mph and a damage path up to 200 yards wide. NWS surveyors documented concentrated tree and structural damage along the path, including the 2300 block of West 167th Street in Markham and tree damage along I-80/I-294 near the Dixie Highway exit. A separate EF-1 with 110 mph winds and a 225-yard width was confirmed just east of Glenwood. Homes along this corridor saw the full range of tornado damage: stripped shingles, broken decking, failed flashing, and debris impacts.
Orland Park: EF-0, 85 mph, 2.9 miles
An EF-0 tornado with 85 mph peak winds cut a 2.9-mile path up to 250 yards wide through Orland Park. EF-0 damage is easy to underestimate from the ground. Winds in this range lift shingle courses, break seals, and peel ridge caps without always removing material outright. If you're in the Orland Park path, assume your seal strips are compromised until an inspector says otherwise.
Romeoville: EF-0, 80 mph, 2.5 miles
A separate EF-0 with 80 mph winds tracked 2.5 miles through Romeoville with a maximum width of 110 yards. This track sits inside the same corridor hit repeatedly this summer, and roofs here have now been through the June 10 derecho, the June 11 outbreak, and July 27 in the span of seven weeks.
DuPage County: Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Downers Grove
NWS surveys confirmed a brief EF-0 tornado that started just south of Wheaton College in Wheaton and stayed on the ground for about two minutes. A tornado was photographed in north Glen Ellyn near a radar-indicated debris signature, with concentrated tree damage on Stacy Court, including large trees snapped and uprooted onto homes. A third EF-0, with 85 mph winds over a 2.1-mile path, was confirmed in Downers Grove. DuPage homeowners should also remember this follows the March baseball-sized hailstorm. Many roofs in this county now carry overlapping damage from multiple 2026 events.
Lake County: 82 mph measured gust in the Waukegan area
As the storms reached the lakefront, the Beach Park ASOS measured a peak gust of 82 mph at 3:43 p.m. The damage matched the number: a roof was blown off an apartment building on North Butrick Street in Waukegan, hangars were damaged at Waukegan Airport, and widespread tree and power line damage was reported across Waukegan, Beach Park, Lake Forest, and Mettawa. Straight-line wind at 82 mph does the same work on a roof as a weak tornado over a much wider area.

Why You Probably Can't See the Damage
Most of what July 27 did to roofs is invisible from the driveway. Tornado and severe thunderstorm winds break the adhesive seal along each shingle course and crease the shingle at the lift point. The roof still looks intact from the street, but the wind resistance the manufacturer designed it for is gone. The next 60 mph gust, and Chicagoland gets several every year, starts peeling shingles that were already loosened on July 27.
Hail up to 1 inch accompanied the warnings, and debris carried by tornado winds impacts roofs the same way hail does: it bruises the shingle mat under the granules. Any contractor offering to waive or absorb that deductible is proposing insurance fraud, full stop.
