Why a Free Storm Damage Roof Inspection Is the Right First Move
After a severe storm passes through Chicagoland, most homeowners have two questions: did my roof take damage, and if it did, is it worth filing a claim? The honest answer is that you cannot tell from the ground. Hail bruises are invisible from your driveway. Wind damage hides on the back slope. Cracked flashing and compromised pipe boots only show up under direct inspection. A free storm damage roof inspection from a Haag-certified inspector gives you the one thing that actually matters: a documented, photographed scope of whatever damage is or isn't there. Then you can make an informed decision.
Calling your insurance company first is a common mistake. Once you report a claim, the adjuster's scope becomes the reference point by default. Getting an independent inspection first means you're going into the claim with your own documented damage report, not working from a blank page. Homeowners who file with documentation in hand see more complete scopes of loss approved. It isn't a close call.
The inspection is free. We dispatch a Haag-certified inspector to your address immediately, same day in most cases. There is no obligation to hire us, no deposit, and no signature required during the inspection visit. If we find nothing, you know your roof is fine and you've avoided filing a claim you didn't need. If we find damage, you have a report ready to submit with your claim.
What Happens During Your Inspection
A Haag-certified inspector arrives at your property in a marked truck with a ladder, camera, and inspection tools. The inspection usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Roof walk. The inspector climbs onto the roof and walks every slope. Each shingle gets pressed for soft spots. Each impact point gets photographed with close-up detail and a scale reference. Hit counts get tallied per 10-by-10-foot test square so the density of damage is documented, not estimated. Back slopes, valleys, dormers, and hard-to-see sections get the same treatment as the street-facing slopes.
Flashing and metal inspection. Ridge caps, valley metal, step flashing around chimneys and walls, pipe boots, and roof vents all get checked for dents, cracks, and seal compromise. Hailstones that bounce off metal leave a different signature than hits on shingles, and both get documented.
Gutters, soffit, and fascia. Dented gutters and downspouts confirm hail direction and size. Cracked fascia and damaged soffit indicate the force of impact. These exterior details also strengthen the insurance claim by providing corroborating evidence that a storm event occurred at the property.
Attic check when accessible. If the attic is accessible, the inspector looks for interior water staining, daylight through the decking, and any evidence of leaks that have already started. Interior evidence is often the clearest proof that a roof leak is active.
Written report. After the inspection, you receive a written report with photos of every documented point of damage, hit counts, affected area measurements, and a summary of findings. The report is yours to keep regardless of whether you hire us for the work.

How Our Free Inspection Strengthens Your Insurance Claim
Insurance claims hinge on documentation. A report that meets the adjuster's expectations, with hit counts, damage measurements, and photos that match their own Xactimate estimating framework, is the single biggest factor in whether your claim gets approved at the full scope or gets reduced.
Our Haag-certified inspectors document damage in exactly that format. Haag is the forensic inspection standard used by adjusters, engineers, and manufacturers for hail and wind damage assessment. When you hand your adjuster a Haag-certified report, they know what they're looking at. It prevents arguments about whether damage is actually present and redirects the conversation to the scope and value of the repair. For context on the full filing process, see our guides to Farmers claims, State Farm claims, Allstate claims, USAA claims, Progressive claims, Liberty Mutual claims, Travelers claims, and American Family claims.
Beyond the report itself, our inspectors are available to attend your adjuster visit. An experienced contractor on the roof with the adjuster walks them through each documented damage point, ensures back slopes and hidden components get attention, and explains code-required materials that the adjuster's standard scope may not include. This step routinely prevents the most common underpayment issues.
What You Are NOT Getting From Us
You are not getting a sales pitch on your porch. You are not getting a clipboard shoved in your face with a contract to sign before we've even looked at your roof. You are not getting an "exclusive representation" form that transfers your insurance rights to us. You are not getting an offer to waive your deductible (insurance fraud under Illinois law).
You are getting an inspector who climbs the roof, documents what's there, delivers the report, and leaves. If you like the report and want us to handle the claim and the work, we talk about that after you've had time to review. If you don't, you keep the report and we move on. Our guide to avoiding storm chasers covers the specific high-pressure tactics to watch for, especially from out-of-town crews that follow hailstorms into the region.
Why Chicagoland Homeowners Trust Us for Free Storm Damage Roof Inspections
Haag certification is the forensic inspection standard for hail and wind damage. Our inspectors are trained to identify, document, and present storm damage in the format insurance companies recognize. This is the single most important credential for storm damage work.
We are a GAF Master Elite contractor. Only 2% of roofing companies nationwide qualify. The designation requires demonstrated installation quality, proper licensing and insurance, and ongoing technical training. For homeowners, it means the eventual installation meets manufacturer specifications and comes with GAF's strongest warranty coverage.
Our BBB A+ rating reflects how we handle the job from the first inspection through the final walk-through. Complaints get resolved. Warranties get honored. We answer the phone a year after the job is done when you have a question. We've completed over 25,400 projects across Chicagoland since 2015 and we're based in Hillside, IL with a permanent Illinois presence. We are not a storm-chasing out-of-state crew. When we give you a workmanship warranty, we're close enough to honor it.
For more context on our services, see our storm restoration and hail damage pages, or check your storm history on our interactive NWS storm map.
Local Contractor, Not a Storm Chaser
C&N Construction runs from 24 N Hillside Ave, Hillside, IL 60162. Permanent office, not a PO box. Licensed and insured in Illinois since 2015. Over 25,400 projects completed across Chicagoland with in-house W-2 crews. When we give you a warranty, we're still here to honor it.
No-Risk Contract
You sign a contingency agreement. We don't start work until your insurance company approves the claim. If the claim doesn't go through, you don't owe us anything. No deposit. No cancellation fee. The contract doesn't screw anyone.
Your Budget, Your Call
If insurance approves less than the full scope we recommended, you decide what happens. You can spec down the project to match your payout exactly. Same materials. Same warranty. You won't pay for unapproved work unless you tell us to order it before the approval.
We Call You First
We don't silently revise your project to match whatever insurance approved. If there's a gap between our recommendation and the payout, we pick up the phone. We walk through the difference and help you keep out-of-pocket as low as possible. The only reasons you'd pay extra are to fix damaged lumber our crew needs to stand on or if you want to upgrade to luxury shingles.
