Hail History for Maywood

NOAA's Storm Events Database lists 20 hail reports within 5 miles of Maywood from 2010 to 2026, 16 of them at 1 inch or larger.

Maywood and the Tornadoes on Record

Maywood is named in two entries on the record. NWS Chicago's significant tornado list puts the worst damage of the March 28, 1920 F4 tornado "Maywood through Melrose Park," on a 53-mile path that killed 20 people (NWS Chicago). A May 5, 1930 F2 tornado moved four blocks through Maywood (Wikipedia, Tornadoes in Chicago).

Those are history. For 2026, the Cook County storm events above are county-level NWS Chicago write-ups. We did not find an NWS survey that names Maywood in 2026.

Hail and wind damage are what matter now. The best time to document them is right after a storm, before weathering muddies the marks.

What Maywood's Housing Means for Your Roof

Maywood was founded in 1869 along the railroad, and Wikipedia reports that many century-old homes survive here in relatively unaltered condition, with 17 homes and properties on the National Register of Historic Places (source). The village covers 2.72 square miles.

Old houses have steep or complex rooflines, older plank decking and, often, several layers of past roofing. Dormers, valleys and chimney flashing take more labor to do right. We scope those details separately so the estimate matches the roof you actually have.

Storm Damage Roofing Services for Maywood

Every Maywood project starts with a Haag-certified inspector on the roof. They walk each slope, press-test for bruising and mat fractures, check every flashing, pipe boot and vent, and photograph the damage up close. The inspection produces a report formatted for insurance submission. The report is yours whether or not you hire us. Our post on identifying hail damage explains what they look for.

For Maywood homes with confirmed damage, we do complete storm restoration from tear-off through final inspection: removing damaged shingles to the deck, replacing bad decking and underlayment, and installing GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles with ice and water barrier at the eaves and in valleys. Flashings, pipe boots, drip edge and ridge ventilation are replaced new. Siding, gutters and soffit are included when the claim covers them.

With an active leak, don't wait for paperwork. Our emergency repair team can tarp or seal the damage to limit interior water damage, and tarping is often part of a covered claim. For the filing steps, see how to file a roof insurance claim.

Insurance Claims in Maywood

Get a Haag-certified roof inspection before you call your carrier. The report, with hit counts, measurements and section-by-section photos, turns a general damage complaint into a documented one.

When your insurer sends an adjuster, C&N meets them on the roof and walks through each finding. We're roofing contractors, not public adjusters. We document the damage, meet the adjuster and scope the work. If the adjuster's scope leaves out damage we documented, we give you the photos and measurements to send back.

If a claim is denied or underpaid, your options may include a re-inspection request, a licensed public adjuster, or your policy's appraisal clause. Results depend on your policy and your facts, and we don't promise any outcome.

Why Maywood Homeowners Need a Local Contractor

After a storm, out-of-town crews knock on doors, push for signed contracts, and are gone by the time a leak shows up. Their warranty is only as good as the company that stands behind it.

C&N Construction is headquartered in Hillside, IL, and has been at the same address since 2015. We run W-2 crews, hold the GAF Master Elite designation, and employ Haag-certified inspectors. C&N has completed work in Maywood and in the towns around it. Before you sign with anyone, ask to see their State roofing license and their village registration.

Class 4 Shingles in Maywood

When your roof is replaced through an insurance claim, you can upgrade to the impact-rated option by paying the difference between the approved standard material and the upgrade. Timberline HDZ is our standard architectural shingle. The impact-rated option is GAF Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat, which GAF rates UL 2218 Class 4 when sold in the marked packages (GAF, checked October 2026).

No shingle is hailproof. Class 4 is a lab test, a proxy for the common 1-inch to 2-inch hail that crosses Chicagoland most years, not a promise about any one storm. Some carriers discount premiums for Class 4 roofs, so ask yours what it offers and get the answer in writing before you decide.

We also serve Forest Park, Oak Park, River Forest, Hillside, Bellwood, and Melrose Park. Every project carries the same GAF warranty coverage from in-house crews.

Roofing Permits in Maywood

What Village of Maywood Building & Code Enforcement Department and the village publish about roofing, checked October 22, 2026:

  • Permit: The municipal code (§ 150.011) requires a permit before the erection, alteration or repair of any building. It exempts the "ordinary repairs" listed in § 150.002(K), with the contractor filing notice with the Building Director if the work costs more than $1,000. We could not confirm from the village's pages whether a reroof counts as an ordinary repair, so call before work starts. Source
  • Roofing contractor license: The village's contractor application lists a roofing contractor license with a $5,000 bond, certificate of liability insurance, State license, driver's license and a $100 fee. Source
  • Review time: The village says a first permit review typically takes 3 business days, and most projects need two formal reviews before a permit issues. Source
  • Fee: Not published on the pages we checked. Page checked
  • Ice barrier and layer limits: Not published on the pages we checked. Page checked

Illinois law also says a municipality that requires a building permit may not issue it to a roofing contractor without proof of current State licensure (225 ILCS 335/5(a-3), checked October 22, 2026).

Call the building department at (708) 450-4405 to confirm before work starts. Our suburb roofing permit table covers other towns.

What the Money Looks Like

On an approved storm claim, your out-of-pocket cost in Maywood for the covered work is your deductible. Your policy sets it: often a flat amount such as $1,000 to $2,500, and for wind and hail frequently a percentage of dwelling coverage (1% to 2%). Paying cash, most residential roof replacements land between $14,000 and $25,000 depending on the size of the home, with larger or complex roofs running higher and repairs starting around $400.

What moves the number

Roof size and pitch, tear-off layers, decking condition, and material tier. Every quote is itemized line by line, so you can see which one is moving yours.

What a normal job includes

Tear-off and disposal, underlayment and ice and water shield, flashing and drip edge, ridge venting, cleanup with magnetic sweeps, the permit, and warranty registration.

Full pricing detail: replacement costs, repair costs, and how we get paid when the inspection is free. Insurance figures assume a covered peril and approved claim; your policy controls. The only out-of-pocket surprises we allow are the ones we disclose first: rotted decking and upgrades you choose.

One Case Study, With the Receipts

On a recent insurance-funded roof, the carrier's first estimate missed 292 linear feet of gutter work. Our documented supplement recovered it: a $2,928 line added to the carrier's own estimate, with photos attached. And when we didn't complete a $13.81 downspout item on another project, the final invoice showed a $13.81 credit. Itemized in both directions, every time. The actual documents are on our billing transparency page.

Who Should You Actually Call?

A handyman is fine when

One slipped shingle on a young roof, a gutter re-hang, or a small cash fix under a few hundred dollars. No claim involved, no documentation needed. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a truck roll.

Call us when

Storm damage, anything slope-wide, a replacement, or any job where insurance is paying, because that's a documentation job as much as a roofing job. Weighing whether to file at all? The break-even math is here.

It's urgent when

Water is inside, decking is exposed, or a tree is on the roof. Emergency tarping runs 24/7, and the tarp decision is separate from choosing your replacement contractor, so don't let anyone bundle the two at your door.

How It Works When You Say Yes

No-risk contract. You sign a contingency agreement. Work starts after insurance approves the claim. If it doesn't go through, you owe nothing.

Your budget, your call. You can spec down the project to match your insurance payout exactly. You won't pay for unapproved work unless you tell us to order it before the approval.

We call you first. If there's a gap between our recommendation and insurance, we call you. The only reasons you'd pay extra are damaged lumber or a luxury shingle upgrade.

Common Questions

Maywood Storm Damage FAQs

Does a reroof in Maywood need a permit?
The village code requires a permit before altering or repairing a building and exempts listed "ordinary repairs," with contractor notice required over $1,000. We could not confirm from the village's pages how it treats a reroof, so call the Building & Code Enforcement Department at (708) 450-4405 before work starts.
How do I check a roofer's Maywood license?
The village's contractor application lists a roofing license with a $5,000 bond, insurance, a State license and a $100 fee. Ask any roofer for their Maywood license number and their Illinois roofing license.
Are old Maywood homes harder to reroof?
Often, yes. Wikipedia reports many century-old homes survive in Maywood. Older houses can have multiple layers, plank decking and complex rooflines, and each adds labor that belongs in a written scope.
Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?
Inspect first, file second. A Haag-certified inspection gives you photos, hit counts and measurements before you talk to your carrier, so you know the scope and whether the damage clears your deductible. We're roofing contractors, not public adjusters. We document the roof, meet your adjuster at the property, and scope the work.
How much does a roof replacement cost in Maywood?
Costs vary with roof size, pitch, material, layers to tear off and the number of penetrations. We give a written estimate before work begins, and it matches the documentation submitted to your insurer. The range on this page is where most residential replacements land, and your written estimate sets the actual number for your roof.
How do I avoid storm chasers after a storm?
Look up the company's permanent office address, confirm their Illinois roofing license, check their registration with your village, and read real Google reviews. Anyone who offers to waive or absorb your deductible is asking you to take part in insurance fraud, which Illinois law prohibits.
Do I have to pay anything before insurance approves?
No. You sign an agreement, and work doesn't start until your insurer approves the claim. Your deductible and any upgrades you choose are your responsibility under your policy. Read the agreement before you sign and ask us anything in it.
