The 2026 Chicagoland Storm Report

The Question We Set Out to Answer

Homeowners ask us a version of the same question after every storm: was this actually a big one, or does it just feel that way? Nobody publishes a plain answer for Chicagoland, so we built one. The question we fixed before counting anything: how many severe weather events confirmed by the National Weather Service affected the eight-county Chicagoland area in 2026, which communities did they hit, and when does each one's insurance claim window close?

We wrote the counting rules before we looked at the result, and we're publishing the rules alongside the findings so anyone can check our work or disagree with it.

What We Counted, and What We Left Out

Counted: severe weather events between March 14, 2026 and August 14, 2026 that (a) affected at least one of Cook, DuPage, Will, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, or DeKalb counties, and (b) carry a National Weather Service damage survey, an NWS Chicago event summary, or Storm Prediction Center storm reports documenting tornado, hail, or damaging wind.

Left out: warnings that produced no confirmed damage reports, events affecting only counties outside the eight named above, and winter weather. We counted events, not individual tornadoes or hail reports, so a single day producing five tornadoes counts once. That choice makes the total conservative.

Sources: public-domain NWS damage surveys and event summaries, plus SPC storm reports. We compiled and counted; we did not generate the underlying observations. Every event in the table links to its government source.

Findings

Chicagoland took 13 confirmed severe weather events across 153 days, which is one damaging event roughly every 13 days through the season. 5 of those events produced confirmed tornadoes. Peak measured wind reached 165 mph and the largest reported hail was 4.8 inches.

Which Communities Appeared Most

The result that surprised us: the communities at the top of this list are not the ones that got the news coverage. Coverage follows tornado tracks, which are narrow. Straight-line wind and hail cover whole counties, so a town can appear in three separate confirmed events without ever making the evening news, and its roofs take the accumulated damage anyway.

Every Event, With Its Claim Deadline

Most Illinois homeowner policies require filing within 12 months of the date of loss, so each event carries its own closing date. If your community appears beside a date that hasn't passed, damage from that storm is generally still claimable, which is the practical reason this table exists.

Limits of This Data

Three honest limits. First, counting events rather than individual reports understates severity: the August 10-11 derecho alone produced five confirmed tornadoes and counts once. Second, NWS damage surveys go where damage is reported, so sparsely populated areas are systematically under-documented. Third, our community lists come from NWS write-ups, which name the towns surveyors reached, not every town that took wind.

All three limits push the same direction: this compilation undercounts. Treat it as a floor, not a ceiling.
