Can Individual Slates Be Repaired?
Yes, and that's the normal repair. Slate isn't like asphalt, where damage across a slope usually means replacing the slope. A slater removes each broken piece and installs a matched replacement, secured with a slate hook or a bib flashing slipped under the course above.
Matching is its own craft. Replacement slates are matched by quarry type, color, and weathering, and an entire salvage market exists to supply reclaimed slate for exactly this purpose. A competent slate repair is invisible from the street.
Per piece, slate repair costs more than comparable asphalt work, but it runs far below replacement. That math is why insurers and slate contractors alike prefer repair when the breakage is limited, and why repair costs on slate shouldn't be estimated off asphalt numbers.

When Does Slate Replacement Beat Repair?
Repair has honest limits. Widespread breakage across multiple slopes, advanced delamination underneath the storm damage, or nail sickness shedding sound slates all point past piece-by-piece repair. Storm or not, delaminating slate is at the end of its life, and repairs into a failing field don't hold.
At that point there are three legitimate paths. Natural slate is the premium option and the truest to the house.
