The Short Answer

State Farm doesn't publish a checklist that triggers a roof replacement. Its public pages say wind, hail, fire, and lightning damage to a roof is typically covered, wear and tear and rot typically aren't, and your policy's loss settlement terms set the payment. The part you can control is proof: documented damage tied to a storm date.

## What State Farm Says Is Covered

On its [home and property claims page](https://www.statefarm.com/claims/home-and-property), State Farm lists roof damage from wind, hail, fire, and lightning as typically covered, and that includes roof damage from a downed tree. It lists wear and tear, rot, deterioration, and workmanship (improper installation or repairs) as not typically covered. The page tells you to check your policy or ask your agent.

That answers the most common question first. State Farm lists wind among the typically covered causes of roof damage. A wind claim on an older roof often becomes an argument about cause, because the same missing or creased shingles can be read as storm damage or as age. Our guides to [spotting wind damage on a roof](https://chicagostormpros.com/blog/how-to-spot-wind-damage-on-roof/) and [what to do when the adjuster says no damage](https://chicagostormpros.com/compare/adjuster-says-no-damage/) cover the evidence.

## What State Farm's Claims Pages Do and Don't Say

We read State Farm's [home and property](https://www.statefarm.com/claims/home-and-property) and [roof claims](https://www.statefarm.com/claims/home-and-property/roof-claims) pages on October 22, 2026 for each item below. "Not published" means the page does not say.

Question

What State Farm's pages say

How do I report a roof claim?

Online, in the State Farm app, through your agent, or at 800-SF-CLAIM (800-732-5246), available 24/7.

What roof damage is covered?

Typically wind, hail, fire, lightning, and downed-tree damage. Typically not wear and tear, rot, deterioration, or workmanship.

How much damage justifies replacement instead of repair?

Not published.

At what roof age does the payment change?

Not published on these pages. State Farm's Simple Insights page says some policies settle individual items, such as roof or siding claims, differently.

How long until a decision?

Not published. The home and property page says payments over your deductible will be issued as quickly as possible.

Must I use a State Farm contractor?

No. "It is your choice as to who you select and hire to provide an estimate or complete repairs."

What should the estimate include?

Quantities of all materials including vents and flashing, labor charges, work specifications, approximate dates, payment procedures, permits, and warranty details.

Because the replacement threshold isn't published, treat "requirements" as a documentation problem. The adjuster's scope decides repair or replacement, and the scope reflects what the inspection recorded. Ask in writing which slopes are being repaired or replaced and why, and ask for a copy of the estimate. Illinois regulations require the company to supply the written estimate on request when a partial loss was settled on one, and to review and respond in writing to a higher estimate you obtain ([50 Ill. Adm. Code 919.80(d)(7)(C)](https://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/050/050009190000800R.html)).

## How the Payment Works: ACV, RCV, and Roof Terms

State Farm's [Simple Insights page](https://www.statefarm.com/simple-insights/residence/replacement-cost-vs-market-value) (April 16, 2026) explains that an actual cash value settlement takes depreciation into account and a replacement cost settlement does not. Some replacement cost policies start with an actual cash value payment and pay the rest after the work is complete, with time limits that may apply. The Illinois Department of Insurance's claims guide adds that a policy may pay actual cash value on the roof and replacement cost on the rest of the home.

We could not retrieve State Farm's Illinois homeowners policy or roof endorsements. For comparison, Missouri's insurance department describes (its company pages were not loading when we rechecked on October 22, 2026, so treat this as unconfirmed) State Farm's Missouri policy as replacement cost for covered roof losses with an optional wind and hail endorsement, offered for a premium reduction, that limits payment to a percentage of the roof's replacement cost on a pre-determined schedule. That is Missouri. Read the endorsement list on your own declarations page for anything similar. Our [roof payment schedule guide](https://chicagostormpros.com/insurance/roof-payment-schedule-recoverable-depreciation/) explains how those schedules work.

One Illinois decision is specific to State Farm. In [_Sproull v. State Farm Fire & Casualty Co._, 2021 IL 126446](https://law.justia.com/cases/illinois/supreme-court/2021/126446.html), the Illinois Supreme Court held that where the policy did not define actual cash value, depreciation could not be applied to labor. It turned on that policy's wording, so ask an Illinois insurance attorney whether it fits yours.

## Select Service, Premier Service, and Choosing Your Roofer

Homeowners also search for the Premier Service Program. State Farm's consumer claims pages now describe the [Select Service Home Repair Program](https://www.statefarm.com/claims/home-and-property/select-service), including roofing services. We could not confirm how the Premier Service Program name relates to it, because the State Farm contractor-portal page we had cited for that name no longer loads.

The roofing steps State Farm lists are: you opt in, State Farm sends an assignment to a network service provider, the provider matches you with a background-checked local roofer, the roofer inspects and writes an estimate, the provider reviews it and returns it to State Farm, State Farm reviews it and contacts you, payment is issued to the contractor after you approve the completed repairs, and you pay your deductible directly to the contractor. State Farm lists a five-year workmanship warranty as a benefit. It also says the program is voluntary, you can choose your own contractor, and the listed benefits are available only through the program.

State Farm's [contractor locator](https://www.statefarm.com/claims/home-and-property/contractor-locator) names network service providers that manage roofing contractor networks, and says State Farm does not guarantee or warrant their work or any contractor you select. Whichever way you go, get the estimate in writing, check that the roofer's insurance is active, and compare it against State Farm's estimate line by line.

## How Long State Farm Has to Act in Illinois

Illinois defines "prompt investigation" as a bona fide effort to communicate with insureds and claimants, when liability is reasonably clear, within 21 working days after notice of loss, and "reasonable promptness" in acknowledging communications as a maximum of 15 working days ([50 Ill. Adm. Code 919.40](https://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/050/050009190000400R.html)). For fire and extended coverage claims, if a claim is unresolved more than 75 calendar days from the date it is reported, or 25 calendar days after proof of loss, whichever is less, the company must give you a written explanation for the delay with notice of the Department of Insurance (919.80(d)(7)(B)). If a claim stalls, the Department takes written complaints and allows the insurer 21 days to respond.

If State Farm says no, read our [State Farm denied roof claim](https://chicagostormpros.com/insurance/state-farm-roof-claim-denied/) page. For the full carrier guide, see [State Farm roof claims](https://chicagostormpros.com/insurance/state-farm-roof-claim/). The [insurance claims page](https://chicagostormpros.com/insurance-claims/), the [public adjuster page](https://chicagostormpros.com/public-adjuster/), and the [free storm damage roof inspection](https://chicagostormpros.com/free-storm-damage-roof-inspection/) cover the rest. We're roofing contractors, not public adjusters, so we document the roof and write estimates and leave policy interpretation and negotiation to licensed public adjusters and attorneys.

## Free Roof Inspection

Haag certified. Report is yours to keep.

Free Inspection + Free Referral List

State Farm Denied or Underpaid Your Claim?

Two things, both free. First, a Haag-certified roof inspection with full photo documentation in the exact format carriers require, so any dispute starts from hard evidence. Second, our referral list of Illinois-licensed public adjusters who handle storm claims in Chicagoland, so if your claim needs a professional negotiator, you know who to call.

One line we never cross: we're roofing contractors, not public adjusters. We don't interpret your policy or negotiate your settlement, because Illinois law reserves that work for licensed public adjusters. What we do is document your damage to a forensic standard and connect you with the right licensed help. No cost, no obligation, and nothing to sign.

Full disclosure: we don't take referral fees from public adjusters, and no one on the list pays to be on it. Referrals are based on Illinois licensing and storm claim experience, and you're always free to hire any public adjuster you choose.

One Case Study, With the Receipts

On a recent insurance-funded roof, the carrier's first estimate missed 292 linear feet of gutter work. Our documented supplement recovered it: a $2,928 line added to the carrier's own estimate, with photos attached. And when we didn't complete a $13.81 downspout item on another project, the final invoice showed a $13.81 credit. Itemized in both directions, every time. The actual documents are on our [billing transparency page](https://chicagostormpros.com/compare/legitimate-roofing-invoice/).

Common Questions

## Frequently Asked Questions

What are State Farm's requirements for roof replacement?

State Farm does not publish a replacement checklist on the claims pages we checked on October 22, 2026. Its pages say roof damage from wind, hail, fire, and lightning is typically covered, including damage from a downed tree, and wear and tear, rot, deterioration, and workmanship typically aren't. Whether the adjuster scopes a repair or a replacement is decided at inspection. Documented damage tied to a storm date is what you can control.

Does State Farm cover wind damage to my roof?

State Farm's home and property claims page lists wind among the causes of roof damage that are typically covered. Your policy controls, and the page tells you to check it or ask your agent. Wear and tear, rot, and deterioration are listed as not typically covered, so a wind claim on an old roof often turns on cause.

How much does State Farm pay for a new roof?

State Farm doesn't publish a figure, and the number depends on your policy: the loss settlement basis, the deductible, and any roof-specific terms. State Farm says an actual cash value settlement subtracts depreciation and a replacement cost settlement generally doesn't, and that some policies treat roof claims differently from the rest of the home. Your declarations page and the adjuster's written estimate show your numbers.

What is State Farm's Premier Service Program?

State Farm's consumer pages now describe the Select Service Home Repair Program, including roofing services. We could not confirm how the older Premier Service name relates to it. The program is voluntary. State Farm sends an assignment to a network service provider, which matches you with a background-checked local roofer. State Farm lists a five-year workmanship warranty and direct payment to the contractor as benefits, and says they apply only if you use the program.

Does State Farm require me to use a specific roofer?

No. State Farm's roof claims page says it is your choice who you select and hire to provide an estimate or complete repairs. It suggests an established, licensed, or bonded roofer, references, and certificates of insurance, and it says State Farm does not warrant or guarantee the performance of any contractor you select.

How long does State Farm have to decide a roof claim in Illinois?

State Farm doesn't publish a fixed number of days. Illinois regulations set markers for fire and extended coverage claims: a bona fide effort to communicate when liability is reasonably clear within 21 working days after notice of loss, and a written explanation for the delay if a claim is unresolved more than 75 calendar days after it was reported, or 25 calendar days after proof of loss, whichever is less. If a claim stalls, the Illinois Department of Insurance takes written complaints.

What if State Farm denies the roof claim?

Illinois requires a written explanation, within 30 days after the investigation is completed, that cites the policy provision relied on. Our State Farm denial page walks through the evidence, estimate, complaint, and deadline steps. We document the roof and write estimates. We don't interpret policies or negotiate settlements.
